Zarnata Castle

If you want to see a small castle with great history, then you have to make a small stop at the Castle of Zarnata and enjoy its greatness. It’s located in the small town of Kampos Avias it’s one of the most important castles in the area. It’s built on a small hill within a fertile valley that adds extra value to its flourishing past. 

History:
It  was built around the 15th century, on the foundations of some ancient citadel, but it’s not clear whether it was an undertaking of the Franks, the Venetians or the Turks. The castle has been passed from Theodoros Palaeologos to his heir, Constantine the Despot of Mystras, and it had a significant part in the Greek Revolution, during the historical events of Mani.

There’s a sign leading to the castle from the central Kardamyli-Kalamata National Road, which you can approach either from the village of Stavropigio or from the town of Kardamyli. The entrance is free
